Among the magazines that they sell, ValueMags employees take interest in books as well. Although their business does not involve selling them, distributing them, or marketing them, ValueMags employees are avid readers. Recently, one employee came across The Great Turning, a book that has circulated throughout the office and inspired many employees.

The Great Turning, a story of active hope is central around the concept of acting in favor of change. However, the author makes it sound easier than accepting change is. Luckily, Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone break it down for the reader. To accept change, we must first understand that change is a constant adventure (36 Macy., Johnstone).  “Adventure stories often begin by introducing an ominous threat that seems way beyond what the main characters are capable of dealing with” (36 Macy., Johnstone). Change does not occur without progression which is why adventure is a necessary thread when analyzing a situation. We can ask ourselves questions like: what is the initial problem?; when did it start?; what were our solutions?; what are our current solutions?; what is the best outcome given our solutions?; how long will it take for the solution to take effect?; is there an end to the madness?. All of these questions are time related. That is the first of three threads. That may seem like an overwhelming statement but the next threads make the concept of change easier to digest.

These are important questions to ask ourselves. ValueMags employees have taken on the challenge to ask themselves these questions. ValueMags employees are more than citizens but individuals that can contribute the the Great Turning. What can you do?
